Westminster, MA was founded in 1733 although the first permanent settlement of the town didn’t take place until 1737, and the community wasn’t accepted as a town until 1770. In the early 20th century, townspeople made chairs and manufactured paper. In 1828 the famous Westminster Cracker Factory was established and still stands today.

The town of Westminster is part of the two-town Ashburnham-Westminster Regional School District. The Meetinghouse School serves students from kindergarten through grade 1, while Westminster Elementary School serves students from grade 2 through grade 5. Students in grades 6 through grade 8 attend Overlook Middle School in Ashburnham. High school students may choose to attend Oakmont Regional High School in Ashburnham or Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School (“Monty Tech”) in Fitchburg.
