About Boylston, MA
Beauty and graced infused with character and strength makes Boylston the perfect community for you. A town defined by excellence, Boylston is quaint with many residents and a few small businesses.
The story begins in 1743. Boylston was a second parish to a town called Shrewsbury. During this time a man named Ebenezer Morse took his place as the town’s first minister. Having been a Harvard Scholar, who had studied law, he was also very well versed in medicine. He was the town’s spiritual leader and political force. Boylston broke away from Shrewsbury and became its own town in 1788. During the late 1800’s, more than 4,800 acres of majestic land had been cleared away for the Wachusett Reservoir.
John B. Gough became a leader in The Temperance Movement. He resided in Boylston from 1844 until 1866. Artifacts from his life as well as other famous residents can be found in the Historical Society Museum. His mansion aptly named The Gough Estate at Hillside is on the National Register of Historic Places. His mansion is also thought to be one of the most absolutely magnificent in all of Massachusetts.
The Historical Center Building was not always a museum. Its main function back in 1830 was a town hall. The town’s benefactor, Ward Nicholas Boylston, had it built with a grant he bestowed upon the community. Today Boylston rents out the Historical Center Building to the Historical Society to use as an educational museum as well as their headquarters.
In 1986, the Worcester Horticultural Society created a botanic garden at Tower Hill Farm in Boylston. The Society produced an ambitious 50-year Master Plan for the gardens. Today, Tower Hill Botanic Garden features a year-round display of the finest plants for cultivation in New England. Carefully planned gardens and collections of ornamental, edible and native plants, plus trails that enhance the natural features of this beautiful 132-acre property and a robust program and event schedule make Tower Hill a year-round destination. It is truly a local treasure.
